Similar buildings were tested to quantify the effects and results of reflective thermal coating compared with mass insulation.

The first building was built using revised and updated thermal insulation techniques from an experimental energy-saving program which had been designed by a local power company. It also had an external asphalt emulsion finish on the covering.

The second building used minimal insulation in the ceiling and walls and an external asphalt emulsion finish on the covering, with the addition of Advantage 25 EC white-colored ceramic Roof Coating over the asphalt emulsion.

After one year of continuous monitoring, the acrylic-based ceramic insulation coated building consumed 21.9% less energy in the summer. During the winter the ceramic insulation achieved a 4% reduction in energy consumption compared with the control/first building.

The financial pay back on the ceramic coating and labor investment provided a pay-back period of 2.07 years and a return on the investment of 48.3%.
